Banker Steel fabricated over 1,000 tons of structural steel and NYC Constructors installed the steel for the project. This eight year renovation project was part of a $2 billion renovation that reimagined the iconic hotel. With 375 hotel rooms and 372 new private residences, the property has been transformed while preserving the historic landmark.

The renovation of the iconic Waldorf Astoria New York represents one of the most complex historic restoration projects in the country- and we’re proud that Banker Steel and NYC Constructors played a critical role in bringing it forward.

Renovating a historic structure of this scale requires far more than simply replacing or adding steel. Every phase demanded close coordination with the construction manager, AECOM Tishman, to manage evolving design conditions, structural tie-ins to existing framing, and field-driven changes uncovered during demolition.

Because the building remained an active, tightly constrained urban jobsite, we fabricated and sequenced the work one floor at a time. Just-in-time delivery was essential to minimize staging constraints, maintain schedule integrity, and ensure safe installation within limited laydown space in Midtown Manhattan.

Historic renovation also requires:

  • Detailed investigation of existing structural conditions and load paths
  • Precision field measurements to address dimensional inconsistencies in legacy framing
  • Careful integration with preservation requirements
  • Reinforcement strategies that maintain architectural integrity while meeting modern code and performance standards
  • Continuous collaboration between engineering, fabrication, and erection teams
The result is structural steel that quietly does its job- strengthening and modernizing the building while preserving the character that has defined it for generations.

We’re proud to have provided the structural backbone that supports the next chapter of this historic New York landmark.
